NANDA DEVI NATIONAL PARK TREKKING ::

Nanda Devi – world Heritage site and the one of the most fascinating mountain area in the world is located in south eastern part of Garhwal  ( Uttaranchal area) .  To protect this unique  natural Himalayan Heritage the area it was first declared  

A sanctuary, then upgraded to  National park in 1982 and later to stop all kind of tourist & other activities as biosphere reserve in  1988.

This unique mountain area covering 630 sq. kms is endowed with the biotic and physical torist resource of par excellence. The park is encircled by a vast ring of lofty mountains giving it a shape of natural fortress . Some of the important peaks in the area are Dungiri ( 7066 mts) , Changbang ( 6864 mts),  Kalanka (6932 Mts) , Rihsipahar ( 6992 Mts), NandaKhat (6611mts) , Maiktoli (6303 Mts), Mrigthuni (6565mts) , Bethartoli  Himal ( 6352 Mts) ,Trishul I & II ( 7120 Mts and 6319 mts), while Nanda East ( 7434 M0 and Nanda Devi ( 7817 Mts) are prominent peaks in the area.

The vast tracts of the Himalayan Meadows are competed with a variety of high altitude plants of incense and medicinal values,  present a most fascinating spectrum while in full blossom. These forested areas harbor good deal of high altitude Fauna specially the species of mammals , birds and butterflies.

The area was first explored by W.M Grahm in 1883, and brought to lime light by missionary & mountaineer T.G. Longstaff  1907 , Eric Shipton and W. Tilman in  1934 . Once brought to lime light the area was most fascinating destination in seventies for the mountaineers from world over.

Flora: Due to the distinctive meteorological values enjoyed by the area offers a unique spectrum of flowering herbs, incense & medical plants. One can encounter easily species of  rare high altitude Himalayan flora e.g primula, sausaurea, aconitum etc.

Fauna: The area abounds good deal of high altitude Himalayan fauna. One can encounter Bharal, Tahr, Goral, Musk deer, snow leopard, black bear, Indian porcupine and many more.

Approach : At a distance of 26 kms from Joshimath, on Joshimath Malari road  lata serves as the best entry point to the area. It is a typical tribal village of “Tolchas” situated near the left bank of Dhalui river. 

The Trek: The entire trek goes  through thick forests and alpine meadows surrounded by glacial torrents, water falls , hillocks , color full boulders, moraines , steep gorges , overhanging cliffs, and roaring rivers.

Closed for tourist activities in early 80’s , this  area undoubtedly worlds richest treasure house of natural tourist assets , otherwise strategically a vulnerable area has now been again opened  for tourist.

One can trek up to Dharasi pass and Dibrugeta from July 2003 onwards, however the number of trekkers/ naturalists/scientists  will be restricted to maximum 500 in one year.

After long awaited decision of opening the area has given chance to trekkers to do once a life trek .

Itinerary for Nanda Devi National Park (NDNP) Tour/Trek

After breakfast drive to Joshimath 253 kms. Overnight  Joshimath

Day for obtaining final permission to venture into NDNP from forest authorities, Joshimath. Overnight Joshimath
3 Joshimath Lata Road Head (2000 m) Lata village (2317 m) 25 kms drive to Lata village road head and 1.5 km trek to Lata village
This is the last human habitation on our trekking route. Trekking would be given on exposure with the unique culture and customs of the region. Visit Lata village and the famous Nanda Devi temple. Overnight in village.
4 Lata village Lata Kharak (3689 m) 8.5 kms trek
The first day of the trek is probably the toughest and involves a steep ascent of almost 1524 m with a break at Belta. Today's trek can be anything from 6 to 10 hours depending upon the individual trekkers. However it is an excellent beginning from the point of view of acclimatization. The camp/hut at Lata Kharak is situated on the height of 3689m and high plateau surrounded by towering rocky Pinnacles. Overnight in Hut/tent.
5 Lata Kharak Jhandi Dhar Bagfyana Satkul Dharansi Pass (4250 m) 10 kms trek
Wake up at down to breath taking view of Mount Bithartoli-Himal (6354 m), Nanda Ghunti (6309 m), Ranthi Peak (6003 m) Dronagiri (7066 m) and the vast view of Kunwari pass, Auli, Urgam Valley and Lata Village. After breakfast trek begins with a steep climb up to Jhandi Dhar and further up to Bagfyana pass. From Bagfyana the trail posses through a very narrow gorge of Satkula with steep ascents and descents and finally one arrive at the meadows of Dharansi pass where we stop for the overnight near the water point. Overnight in tents.
6 Dharansi Pass Debrugheta (3500 m) and back to Dharansi Pass 14 kms trek
Like the inner sanctuary, the prominent Malthuni-Bethartoli ridge, between Dharansi Pass and Debrugheta, also divides the outer sanctuary. Both these ridges from magnificent Pass to Rani Kholi and up to Donidhar is a gradual descent and then from Donidhar to Debrugheta is a steep descent of 750 m till one cross the improvised bridge over the stream. Afternoon return trek to Dharansi Pass. Overnight in tent.
7 Dharansi Pass (4250 m), Satkula, Bagfyana, Jhandi Dhar, Hitoli Campsite 12 kms trek
Return trek up to Jhandi Dhar of about 7.5 kms and further steep descent of 4,5 kms, through the rich forest of Rhododendron, Birch and Raga fur. Overnight in tents at Hitoli campsite.
8 Hitoli Campsite, Tolma village, Surai Thotha (2161 m) road head, Joshimath 8 kms trek and 30 kms drive
Ater breakfast 5 kms trek down to Tolma village through the rich forest ot Thuner, Kail, Ddevdar and Surai. Then further trek down 3 kms to road head Surai Thotha. Drive to Joshimath 30 kms. Overnight in  Joshimath.
9 Joshimath Rishikesh 253 kms drive
After breakfast to Rishikesh 253 kms.On arrival Rishikesh tour/trek concludes.
